Whiskey falls are at their best after heavy rain. But even on a sunny day they are worth a visit. The falls are named after an illicit still found there in the 1880’s and they are an impressive 40 metres high. Keep away from the base of the falls, as there is a high danger of rock falls. There are a couple of options to visit the falls. First of all you can be dropped off at the road end by Nelson Lakes Shuttles (Ph 547 6896) and be picked up at the falls by Rotoiti Water Taxis (Ph 521 1894) It is not wise to leave your car at the track end. From the road end to whisky falls it’s about 1.5 hours one-way. If you have the time you can walk from the Village via The Peninsular Nature Walk. Allow 5-6 hours return or arrange for the shuttle to pick you up from the road end.
